Direct Lateral Interbody Fusion

Spine Fusion

Although most lumbar spine or low back fusions are performed from the back (see Minimally invasive spine fusion), we can also perform the spine fusion from the side of your body, usually from the left. The advantages of this approach are that it can also be done via minimally invasive means, the ability to place a larger cage with more bone graft, thereby leading to a faster bony union. With the use of real time nerve monitoring, the safety of this procedure is greatly enhanced (Figure 1).

The use of this procedure may become more widespread with the increased usage of this technique to surgically manage degenerative scoliosis, where multiple levels of the spine need to be fused, and non-union is one of the challenges.
