Diagnosing & Treating Sports Injuries

Dr Kevin Lee had a two-part interview series on sports injuries with UFM 100.3 radio station in April. In part two of the interview, Dr Lee talked about diagnosing and treating sports injuries in greater details. It is normal for anyone to experience some level of pain when doing exercises or sports. However, you should seek medical attention if the pain persists for more than a week even after rest or reduced exercise. You may even experience the pain even when you are at rest, lying or seated down. That is a warning sign for sports injuries that require medical attention and treatment. The method of treatment administered varies for different types of sports injuries. In general, injuries can be classified as either acute or chronic. Acute injuries come from falls, impacts or traumas to your body. Chronic injuries refer to the repeated wear and tear of the body part overtime. Some of the more advanced treatment methods include arthroscopic surgery and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. Arthroscopic surgery is minimally invasive and can be used to repair the knee, ligaments, menisci and more. As for PRP therapy, it is generally used to treat muscle tears for a much faster recovery. Marathon Running Injuries & Prevention

Dr Kevin Lee had a two-part interview series on sports injuries with UFM 100.3 radio station in April. In part one of the interview, Dr Lee shared health tips on marathon running. As marathon running becomes increasingly popular, knee and ankle injuries from running are also becoming more common. Under normal circumstances, the knee is quite strong and running a marathon is not a problem. Marathon running only becomes a problem if the knee is already weakened or injured previously. As we age, the water content in the knee declines and its components, such as ligament and meniscus, would wear off or get injured more easily. There are three simple ways to prevent marathon running injuries:
  1. Wear appropriate footwear that fits you comfortably
  2. Do adequate warm-up exercises before running
  3. Adopt a progressive training regiment where you gradually increase mileage
