In our orthopaedic clinic in Singapore, Dr Victor Seah sees a lot of athletes with ankle problems. These are usually soccer or basketball players and runners. Fortunately, most ankle pain problems are minor and can resolved with conservative measures.
Ankle Pain Causes
The most common ankle pain problems we see are :
- Ankle Sprains
This is very common in both non-athletes and athletes such as NBA players. We use the Game Ready Treatment System to provide compression and cooling in acute cases. We use this system both in the clinic and on the field to provide immediate swelling and pain reduction of the injured ankle.
- Chronic Ankle Instability Chronic ankle instability is a condition characterized by a recurring “giving way” of the outer (lateral) side of the ankle as a result of repeated ankle sprains.
This presents with pain at the back of the ankle and is common in runners and dancers.
- Fractures resulting in Ankle Pain
This occurs when there is severe trauma to the ankle, causing a break in the bones that make up the ankle. In unstable ankle fractures, surgical treatment would be required.
