Elbow Joint Anatomy

Elbow Joint
The elbow joint and its complex articulations

The elbow joint is one of the most complex and poorly understood joints of the human body. It is made up of 3 irregularly shaped bones with 3 separate articulations (joints). This allows for 2 different plane of motions: flexion and extension; inward and outward rotation. The elbow joint has a tendency to become stiff after significant injury or after open elbow surgery. Surgery around the elbow is fraught with challenges because of the many important nerve and blood vessels that travel around the joint, as well as the potential for stiffness after surgery.
