Marathon Running Injuries & Prevention
Dr Kevin Lee had a two-part interview series on sports injuries with UFM 100.3 radio station in April. In part one of the interview, Dr Lee shared health tips on marathon running.
As marathon running becomes increasingly popular, knee and ankle injuries from running are also becoming more common. Under normal circumstances, the knee is quite strong and running a marathon is not a problem. Marathon running only becomes a problem if the knee is already weakened or injured previously. As we age, the water content in the knee declines and its components, such as ligament and meniscus, would wear off or get injured more easily.
There are three simple ways to prevent marathon running injuries:
- Wear appropriate footwear that fits you comfortably
- Do adequate warm-up exercises before running
- Adopt a progressive training regiment where you gradually increase mileage
