Conservative/Non-operative
Not all back pain treatment requires surgery. Your spine specialist after examining you and getting the investigations done may offer you two options of surgical or non surgical back pain treatment. One, which is usually tried initially (except in cases where operation is absolutely necessary), is the non-invasive form of treatment. This is also called a conservative or non-operative form of managing your back pain. It includes various modalities:
Lifestyle Modifications
Modifying level of activities may make your symptoms of back pain stable for a longer term. But it does not mean that all the activities shall be stopped in view of back pain. Restricting all activities has been found to make the muscles supporting your back go weak. The current recommendations are to continue doing activities within the pain limits, which may be different for different individuals. It is advisable to take rest for some time after walking certain distances, so that the pain generators in your back may get time to relax as well. Avoid sitting in same posture for prolonged periods. You shall keep changing the posture before back pain occurs, so as to distribute/shift the stress from a particular spinal segment to other areas of your back. Strenuous activities like shopping and driving shall be modified accordingly too.
Stop Smoking
Cessation of smoking may help revive or delay the wear and tear of your spine leading to a more normal back, without the intervention of back pain treatment.
Physiotherapy
Non-surgical back pain treatment such as physiotherapy may help with electrical stimulation or heat therapy that may stimulate regeneration of your back. It also incorporates various muscle strengthening exercises including abdominal core muscles and muscles that support your back and thighs. Learning correct postures for common activities may also help in the long run.
Acupuncture
This may help as a non-invasive resort to your back pain treatment. It helps release certain chemical mediators (endorphins) for the relaxation of your back and altering the perception of your back pain as analysed by your brain.
Medicines
Your doctor may prescribe you some pain-killers, anti-inflammatory medicines for the short term. Along with these, sometimes your doctor may also give you nerve stabilizer medicines (Lyrica, Gabapentin) and neuro-vitamins (Vitamin B12) as a supplement. Calcium and vitamin D supplements may be prescribed to you for weakening of your back bones. Chronic pain may require your doctor to prescribe some sleep medicines or anti-depressants.
