Robot-assisted spine surgery and navigation-guided spinal surgery offer safer, more precise treatment for spine conditions. The robotic systems guide surgical tools with high accuracy, while navigation systems provide real-time 3D images to assist the surgeon. These technologies can be used separately or together to improve accuracy, reduce risks, and support less invasive procedures for faster recovery.
Advantages of Robot-Assisted Spine Surgery & Navigation-Guided Techniques
Advancements in technology have led to the development of navigation and robotics that have significantly improved the feasibility, accuracy and efficiency of spinal surgery.
These methods improve the:
- Accuracy of pedicle screw placement
- Reduction of radiation exposure
- Enablement of minimally invasive applications
- Overcoming of human limitations by improving precision in tasks affected by fatigue, tremors, or repetitiveness
How they work
Navigation-Guided Spine Surgery
These navigation systems provide enhanced real-time feedback during surgery. The O-arm scans the patient and reformats images to create a 3-dimensional map for the surgeon to perform the surgery. This facilitates assessment of length and sizes of the screws and can be utilized in complex surgeries for deformity correction.
Intraoperative CT imaging can also be utilized to confirm accuracy and placement of the implants, and if necessary to perform immediate remedial actions.
Robot-Assisted Spine Surgery
Robotic systems are predominantly employed for screw insertion, whereby prior radiographic imaging is used to follow the surgeon’s desired screw trajectory with an automated robotic arm. The surgeon plans the surgery offline, planning the perfect screw size and length, and safest track to minimize complications. The arm is mounted on the operative table. It is guided to a precise location by 3D optical tracking cameras to deliver the planned trajectory for screw placement.
Robot-assisted spine surgery can be combined with intraoperative CT imaging to confirm accuracy and placement of the implants, and if necessary to perform immediate remedial actions.
Together, these technologies offer safer and more effective treatment options with improved precision and faster recovery.
